Taxi Noir Slap Red by Anya Lewin

> 12 April - 10 May 2003

The getaway car that can no longer get away

Behind the blacked-out windows of the cab, an imagined history for the Taxi, as gangster's getaway car, is played out in this new hilarious and evocative video work by artist, Anya Lewin.

Anya says: "Much of my work centres around narrative suggested by location. The taxi reminded me of the imagery of Film Noir. I've borrowed sound from three classics: Double Indemnity, Farewell My Lovely and The Big Sleep. Cutting to the chase, eliminating the build up, I've let death play over and over, adapting the films to my own imagery and to different film genres."

Performer - Misha Myers

Supported by University of Plymouth Department of Art and Design.

Anya Lewin has worked in many diverse fields, from shepherding in France to leather making in Crete. But for the last eight years she has worked as an artist, organiser of events, and educator.

comments book extracts:

a nice break from delivering the paper - thank you!

a great new take on the road movie !

Great fun laughing in the darkness of the taxi - horribly good - those great voices - finally silenced by the red of the blood.

it was fun and memorable - good falling - good shadows

as we sat in the taxi, we were expecting the strange man in the film 'Down The Line' to open the window and say "Where to my loves?"

shagilicious baby ! Put your seat belt on kid ! how many times do I have to tell you?

note:

The opening event for Taxi Noir Slap Red included a screening of 'Down The Line' by Tom Burrows, a sound installation by Dell Olsen, and DJ gillianwylde inbetween and throughout.
